The giant swan boats, which are popular rentals for paddling around the 25-acre Ferril Lake, pose a threat to the otherwise peaceful Jazz in the Park series, jokes 30-year-old Lakewood resident Emerson Smith. They’re too big, scary-looking, and attention-hungry to ignore.

“Systems calibrated. Pool noodles firing at 800 m/s,” reads a July 10 post on Emerson’s Denver Jazz Flotilla Instagram page. “We’re ready to protect the citizens.”

“The whole flotilla thing is just my sense of humor,” admitted Emerson. “It’s fun to act tough while on a purple kayak listening to jazz. And let’s be real: not all jazz is created equal, and sometimes we need something else to entertain ourselves with.”

The concept is a goof, but the gatherings are real. Attendees of City Park Jazz, which takes place on Sunday afternoons over 10 weeks every summer, may have noticed kayaks floating behind the City Park Pavilion stage last summer, when Emerson first got the idea. He invited more friends to join him this year and secured their commitment to doing it as often as possible. Last week he had 10 people join him, he said.

A flock of illuminated swan boats hit the water for the first time in May 2024 at Washington Park in Denver. Wheel Fun Rentals also operates swan boats at City Park. (Eric Heiserman for Wheel Fun Rentals)

“Their enthusiasm made me want to see how big we could make it,” said Emerson, who picked up 50 followers on a Reddit post — most of whom he doesn’t know.

Emerson has not heard any concerns about his semi-organized gatherings from Denver Parks & Recreation, including limits on the number of watercraft on the lake. Hand-launched boats are allowed at nearly all Denver park lakes, no permits required, according to their website.

“A sound-producing device and at least one life jacket per person aboard is required to be on all vessels,” officials wrote.

“(The) only research I did was just to confirm personal kayaks and stuff are actually allowed on that lake,” Emerson said. “I asked ChatGPT and apparently we could fit about 11,000 12-foot kayaks comfortably on Ferril Lake. So that’s the goal.”

It’s not all a joke: on his Instagram bio, Emerson not only mentions defending people from giant swans but adds “Sometimes we pick up trash.” The next meet-up is on Aug. 4, and gloves, trash bags, and “two extra grabby thingys will be provided (first come first serve),” Emerson wrote online. Most of the trash is caught up in plants and is hard to reach while floating, so he plans on walking the shoreline a bit too.

Swan-boat and bike rentals are available at the park from California-based company Wheel Fun Rentals, which sits just a few dozen feet from the jazz bandstand. People can also rent kayaks from Wheel Fun to confront the company’s own swan-boat army, along with sporty and cruiser bikes, four-wheel Surrey cycles, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards. They offer nighttime rentals with LED-decked swan boats that can circle the lake’s giant, lit-up fountain.

Emerson gathers his own fleet in the southeast corner of the 330-acre park starting at 5:30 p.m. on Sundays. He recommends people who want to join him to meet up behind the stage if the show has already started. There’s no boat ramp, but most of the shore is accessible. And despite the lake’s natural beauty, be sure not to get any water in your mouth, he said.

“Like in most bodies of water there are some potentially harmful organisms,” he said. “As far as I understand this presents a relatively low risk but it’s best to avoid contact with the water, especially with your eyes, nose, mouth, open wounds, et cetera, and practice good hygiene.”

The cheeky front will continue even as Emerson works to grow the gatherings. The giant, evil swans are just too big a menace to ignore.

“They threaten to collide with the birds nests under the stage and they scare the native swans,” he said. “In general, they’re just a bad vibe and aren’t happy unless they’re stealing the show with their synchronized dance moves.”

Performances of the free, nonprofit Jazz in the Park series, which began in June, continue through next month with Denver Jazz Orchestra (July 21), Nelson Rangell (July 28), and Jakarta (Aug. 4). See cityparkjazz.org for more.

Friday. Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and Stephen Marley are no strangers to Red Rocks Amphitheatre, but when they stop by the venue on Friday, June 28, there will be a new element to their concert. The Colorado Symphony will be jamming behind the two Marleys, who will perform a mix of original material and iconic songs by their father, Bob Marley. While the symphony is known for its collaborations with artists such as RZA of Wu-Tang Clan and Portugal. The Man, this event marks the first time the orchestra has backed reggae musicians. Our bet is every little thing is gonna be alright.

Blood + music = a serious street party

Sunday. Here’s a new concept for a music festival: turn it into a blood-donor drive. That’s the idea behind the first Music Is in Our Blood Street Party, which takes place 3-8 p.m. in Lower Downtown Denver. The event, along 22nd Street between Welton and California streets (across from The Lodge at Wood Boss Brewing Company), offers not only a diverse lineup of local acts, including Buckstein, Addie Tonic, 2MX2, Wheelchair Sports Camp and DJ Revopsyk (all of whom have benefited from blood donations, organizers said) but also a chance to help those who need immediate transfusions.

This $24 special may be the best sushi deal in Denver https://www.denverpost.com/2024/04/29/denver-sushi-special-happy-hour-handrolls-temaki-den-lunch/ Mon, 29 Apr 2024 12:00:36 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6029580 Editor’s note: This is part of The Know’s series, Staff Favorites. Each week, we offer our opinions on the best that Colorado has to offer for dining, shopping, entertainment, outdoor activities and more. (We’ll also let you in on some hidden gems).

Restaurants that have earned an official nod by Michelin aren’t usually known for budget-friendly menu items. But at Temaki Den, you can get a killer deal on high-end handrolls — if you time your visit right.

From the team behind Sushi Den, Temaki Den is a handroll-focused concept that opened in the Source in 2020 and later grew to add Bar Ikki, a first-come, first-served cocktail bar that serves Temaki Den’s full menu.

If you visit without a reservation during prime dinner hours, you may face a lengthy wait. But there are very good reasons to hit this place up earlier in the day.

During both lunch (11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday-Sunday) and happy hour (4:30-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday), a set of five handrolls is just $24 and includes negihama (yellowtail), red shrimp, negitoro (beautifully fatty tuna), salmon and blue crab. Add a bowl of miso soup ($3) and you’ve got a flavorful, well-rounded meal for around $30 (plus tax and tip, of course).

You’ll find it much easier to snag a walk-in table earlier in the day; ask to sit at the sushi bar to watch these expert chefs in action.

While dropping $30 on lunch or a happy hour meal isn’t exactly cheap, the key thing to consider here is the quality: You’re eating at a Michelin-recommended restaurant known for its commitment to sourcing impeccable seafood.

If you’re just dipping your toe into Denver’s high-end sushi landscape, this $24 special is the perfect introduction. Plus you can always add on nigiri (the salmon oshizushi is a must!), sashimi or other handrolls, and don’t forget to ask what’s on special that day.

Wendy’s announces March Madness deal with $1 cheeseburgers all month https://www.denverpost.com/2024/03/12/wendys-announces-march-madness-deal-with-1-cheeseburgers-all-month/ Tue, 12 Mar 2024 16:55:32 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=5985441&preview=true&preview_id=5985441 Ebony Williams | (TNS) The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

March Madness brackets aren’t the only thing people are going crazy for this month. Wendy’s has announced a mega deal for its popular cheeseburgers.

“It’s almost time for tipoff! While fans are busy researching teams for brackets, getting their gear ready, and prepping their watching schedule, Wendy’s is fueling the fandom with March Madness deals all month long!” the company said in a press release.

Here’s how to score either a $1 Dave’s single or $2 Dave’s double cheeseburger:

  • Visit the Wendy’s app through April 10.
  • Add either the Dave’s single or double to the cart
  • At checkout, click to the “offers page” then “add discount” to the order.

“As the Official Hamburger of March Madness, Wendy’s is giving college basketball fans and athletes the quality fresh, never frozen beef that they deserve to fuel every buzzer beater, layup, and alley-oop all tournament long,” the release continued.

Recently, the fast food conglomerate had fans torn with the news of price surging. A representative for the brand clarified with People how the surge would happen. Apparently, prices wouldn’t be higher during peak hours and instead would be lower during slower parts of the day.

“We would not raise prices when our customers are visiting us most,” Wendy’s said in a statement. “Any features we may test in the future would be designed to benefit our customers and restaurant crew members. Digital menuboards could allow us to change the menu offerings at different times of day and offer discounts and value offers to our customers more easily, particularly in the slower times of day.”

Antiques Roadshow Tickets

If you love antiques and hidden treasures, you are probably a fan of PBS’ hit show, Antiques Roadshow. Many wonder if that family heirloom in the basement has more value than just sentiment. Tickets will be required and only distributed through a lottery. Through March 18, fans can enter for the chance at getting two free tickets at pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow. Too Good To Go

Did you know the USDA estimates that 30 to 40 percent of the U.S food supply is wasted? Every day, surplus food from local restaurants, grocery stores and cafés is thrown away simply because it wasn’t sold in time. Now there is an opportunity to be part of the solution right here in Denver and Boulder. With the Too Good To Go app, eat well at a discounted price, while making a positive impact environmentally, socially and economically. Instead of throwing out extra food, participating businesses make the surplus available for sale through a Surprise Bag. The food is usually sold for half the regular price or less. The actual contents are unknown until you pick up the bag. However, many offer a general description of what may be in the bag. Reserve and pay for the surplus food via the Too Good To Go app. Pick-up times vary by restaurant, but are often in the late afternoon or evening. Many bags sell out quickly, but new ones are added throughout the day.

Free and cheap things to do in Denver in January: Denver Zoo, stock show, mystery movies https://www.denverpost.com/2024/01/02/free-cheap-things-denver-january-zoo-stock-show/ Tue, 02 Jan 2024 14:24:31 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=5907201 Plastic bag changes
A message from the Green Festival to stop using disposable plastic shopping bags.
Plastic bag rules are changing.

Get ready for more plastic bag changes in the new year. Starting Jan. 1, House Bill 21-1162 goes into effect in Colorado. The act prohibits stores and restaurants from providing single-use plastic carryout bags. That means that no plastic bags will be available at all, even for purchase at 10 cents. A store may only furnish a recycled paper bag for 10 cents, but aren’t required to do so. Many are opting not to provide plastic or paper bags at all. If you forget your reusable bags in 2024, there will be three options: Buy a recycled paper bag at 10 cents (if available); purchase a reusable bag at checkout; or carry your purchases by hand. More information about the changes and tips on remembering your bags are at milehighonthecheap.com.

$1 Mystery Movie Monday

Enjoy a major plot twist even before the movie starts at Regal Cinemas’ Mystery Movie Mondays. You can be the first to experience a new release before it opens to the public, usually at a discounted price. But Regal can’t tell the audience what film will be showing, so you take your chances. During Mystery Movie Mondays, Regal Crown Club members enjoy a small popcorn and soft drink combo for $9. The next “secret” screening at Regal is on Jan. 8, when tickets are $5. Screenings take place at select locations. For more secret screenings, go to regmovies.com/static/en/us/promotions throughout the year.

Through Nov. 12. The Boulder Jewish Film Festival could hardly come at a more relevant time. Films that delve into the complexity and nuance of the Jewish experience during this moment of conflict also include works whose creators have been affected by the ongoing war with Hamas, producers said.

Programmers of the Nov. 2-12 fest have responded to this moment by adding topical elements to the fest, they said, including a 5-film segment that celebrates Israel’s 75th anniversary and the short film “The Boy,” by Yahaz Winner, who died in a Hamas attack on his kibbutz, as well as “Sirens” (in the Shorts program).

The centerpiece is the live-scored silent film “The Man Without a World” on Nov. 9, with closing-night film “Idina Menzel: Which Way to the Stage?” arriving on Nov. 12. And a dozen-plus more. All screenings at the Dairy Arts Center, 2590 Walnut St. in Boulder. Tickets: $18-$25 via thedairy.org/boulder-jewish-film-festival.

Free and cheap admission to arts events is what Denver Arts Week is all about, and the annual celebration of Mile High creativity returns Friday, Nov. 3-Nov. 11 with three free events at the Buell Theatre and McNichols Building, plus a fall edition of the city’s popular Denver Public Art Tours.

Presented by the city agency Denver Arts & Venues, this year includes the “Community Cloth” exhibit tour and the Colorado Panorama Denver Public Art Tour (both Nov. 7), a “Woven Together” reception at the Buell (Nov. 8), and the “Culture Cloth” exhibit tour and curator discussion (Nov. 9).

Along the way, Denver Arts Week’s website rounds up dozens of deals and special events that focus on local visual artists, musicians, galleries, murals and street art. The week kicks off Friday, Nov. 3, with expanded First Friday Art Walks across the city’s creative neighborhoods, organizers wrote, plus a free Night at the Museums on Saturday, Nov. 4. A powerhouse “Don Giovanni”

Saturday-Nov. 12. Many of us save up to splurge at the theater this time of year, whether it’s for a play, touring Broadway musical or dance performance. If you’re looking for a once-a-year big ticket show that’s going to blow your hair back, Opera Colorado is back with its vigorous take on “Don Giovanni.”

It’s the nonprofit company’s first staging of the Mozart blockbuster in ten years, producers wrote, with baritone Bruno Taddia in the title role and Danielle Pastin, Ellie Dehn and Kerby Baier as the avenging women who have crossed paths with our titular cad.

Opera ain’t cheap, but in terms of spectacle and talent, it’s worth it for a show like this. Runs Saturday Nov. 4, as well as Nov. 7, 10 and 12 at Ellie Caulkins Opera House, 1385 Curtis St. Tickets: $49-$225 for opening night, as low as $39-$185 for other performances, via operacolorado.org.

Sad songs like you’ve never heard them before

Monday. So you’ve seen hip-hop legends such as Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA backed by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, but have you ever seen an emo band powered by the full sonic palette of strings, horns and wind instruments?

Monday, Nov. 6, is your chance when the aptly named Emo Orchestra featuring Dayton, Ohio, pop-punk veterans Hawthorne Heights comes to the Paramount Theatre in Denver. The nationally touring show promises hits from the leading group plus others from the likes of Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance and more. Hands down, this is the best show we can ever remember… always remember.

The Emo Orchestra plays Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at 1621 Glenarm Place in Denver. Tickets cost $45-$75 at ticketmaster.com.
