UPDATED:

Colorado State Patrol troopers wrote more than 1,200 tickets for speeding in school or construction work zones last year, a 12% increase from 2022, agency officials said Thursday.

Troopers cited 1,237 people for speeding in designated low-speed zones near schools and construction areas last year, up from 1,102 citations in 2022, CSP leaders said in a news release.

“Too many Colorado drivers are failing roadside workers and kids,” agency chief Col. Matthew Packard said in a statement. “No matter the day of week or time, motorists should assume people could be present in these low-speed zones and follow the law because people’s lives literally depend on you.”

The new data was released one day after two Colorado Department of Transportation workers were struck and killed while fixing a sign on the side of U.S. 6 near Palisade. The cause of the crash, which also killed one other person, is under investigation.

Troopers wrote school- or work-zone speeding tickets in 48 of Colorado’s 64 counties in 2023, with the most citations issued in El Paso, Larimer, Adams, Mesa and Garfield counties.
