Tye Simcox on Saturday to check their vehicles for possible damage and bullet holes and to report it or other information they may have about the incident.

Simcox was shot Saturday afternoon while doing paperwork in his marked police truck on the median of U.S. 36 just west of Federal Boulevard in Westminster. Simcox returned fire and killed the assailant, according to law enforcement. Simcox was taken to Denver Health, where he was treated and released that afternoon.

The shooter, a man who was driving a black Chevrolet pickup truck, has not been publicly identified.

His name will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office, said Trooper Gabriel Moltrer. The shooting is still under investigation as investigators look into a possible motive and interview Simcox.

The coroner’s office could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.

People with information about the shooting can contact Colorado State Patrol at 303-239-4501.

In a statement Monday morning, Gov. Jared Polis said he spoke with Simcox and he wished him a “speedy recovery.”

“Colorado thanks Cpl. Tye Simcox for his courageous and brave actions to protect himself and our community,” Polis said in the statement.

Colorado State Patrol trooper shot while parked along U.S. 36, kills gunman in shootout https://www.denverpost.com/2024/09/07/colorado-state-partrol-trooper-shot/ Sat, 07 Sep 2024 21:55:14 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6606641 Corporal Tye Simcox (Photo via Colorado State Patrol)

A gunman driving on U.S. 36 fired on a parked Colorado State Patrol trooper on Saturday afternoon before he pulled over, got out of his vehicle and was killed by the wounded law enforcement officer in a shootout along the turnpike’s center median, authorities said.

The injured officer, identified by the state patrol as Cpl. Tye Simcox, was taken to Denver Health and released later in the afternoon after being treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

“I will tell you very directly that our member was targeted today by a man that intended to kill him, and that is shocking and unacceptable,” Col. Matthew Packard, the chief of the Colorado State Patrol, said during a news conference Saturday evening.

“But our Colorado state trooper responded appropriately and swiftly and courageously, and he won today,” he said. “And by winning, not only did he save his own life, but he saved the rest of his community from someone who was clearly intending to do evil.”

Simcox was parked in his marked Ford 150 pickup truck between two concrete barriers in the center median of U.S. 36, just west of Federal Boulevard in Westminster, doing paperwork around 1:18 p.m., Packard said. An adult male driving a black Chevrolet pickup truck eastbound on U.S. 36 slowed, he said.

“As he passed our trooper (he) started to fire multiple shots from a handgun into our patrol car, aimed at a Colorado state trooper,” Packard said.

The gunman pulled over, exited his vehicle “and began to engage our trooper again,” he said. The man fired his semiautomatic pistol into the patrol vehicle’s windshield as the wounded trooper got out with his rifle and returned fire, officials said.

“He was able to strike and ultimately kill the suspect who was attacking him,” Packard said.

Simcox was shot once in the arm and was able to apply a tourniquet to the limb as he waited for responding Colorado State Patrol troopers and Westminster police officers.

Packard said investigators hadn’t yet identified the dead gunman and didn’t know what led him to fire on the parked trooper.

Investigators closed U.S. 36 in both directions from Federal to Sheridan boulevards for hours following the early-afternoon shooting; westbound lanes reopened at 8:15 p.m. and eastbound lanes reopened around 10 p.m., according to Westminster police.

“I want it to be known that we came out on top today, and that’s really, really important, because that’s what good does,” Packard told reporters. “Good and courageous people win over evil cowardice — and that’s what happened today on Highway 36.”

El Paso County Sheriff deputy shoots at man who allegedly hit him with car https://www.denverpost.com/2024/09/06/police-shooting-el-paso-county-sheriff-security-widefield/ Fri, 06 Sep 2024 16:44:50 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6605508 An El Paso County Sheriff deputy shot at a stolen vehicle Friday morning after the driver allegedly hit the deputy who was attempting to make contact, according to the agency.

The deputy was taken to a local hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said via social media. It’s unclear if the deputy shot the driver because the vehicle sped away, authorities said.

Around 9 a.m., an El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputy found a stolen vehicle near Brant Road and Expedition Drive in unincorporated El Paso County, authorities said.

The driver of the stolen vehicle fled the scene, authorities said. A few minutes later, the same deputy found the vehicle in the Windmill Mesa Park area and tried to make contact, officials said. The driver of the vehicle sped away, hitting the deputy, authorities said. The deputy fired at least one round.

The sheriff’s office is asking for the public’s assistance in finding the vehicle, a 2015 Blue Mazda MPV. If the vehicle is located, authorities said not to approach and call 911.

The deputy will be placed on administrative leave in accord with EPCSO policy.

Man shot, killed by police outside Colorado Springs Walmart https://www.denverpost.com/2024/09/04/police-shooting-colorado-springs-walmart/ Wed, 04 Sep 2024 12:50:37 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6602639 A man is dead after a police shooting in Colorado Springs outside a Walmart.

The man “produced a handgun” at the Walmart and “at least one officer fired at least one round at” him early Wednesday, according to a Colorado Springs Police Department posting on the social media site X. “Officers began rendering medical aid until medical personnel arrived” and the man died at the scene, police said.

Around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, police spotted an unoccupied stolen white Chevy truck in the Walmart parking lot at 3201 E. Platte Ave. Working with police officers inside the Walmart, they identified a man and a woman who had been in the stolen truck.

Police approached the two as they were leaving the Walmart. That’s when the man pulled the gun and the police fired, the police postings said.

Nobody else was injured. Police said the woman was detained and then released. The store was closed.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the shooting, police said.

Glenwood Springs officer fatally shoots suspect police say pulled out firearm https://www.denverpost.com/2024/09/02/glenwood-springs-police-fatal-shooting/ Tue, 03 Sep 2024 00:35:41 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6583214 A Glenwood Springs police officer shot and killed a man wanted on an outstanding warrant Monday after the man pulled out a firearm outside a shopping center, Police Chief Joseph Deras said.

Deras said two officers were on routine patrol at about 1 p.m. when they recognized the man as someone wanted on a felony warrant related to firearm violations.

“As they went to contact the individual, they were in full uniform. The individual obviously recognized that they were police officers. He immediately produced a firearm,” Deras said during a media briefing Monday afternoon.

The officers retreated, Deras said on an audio recording made by the Post Independent newspaper in Glenwood Springs. One officer fired at the man, wounding him. As the man moved toward his vehicle, the officers moved to a second position and the officer fired again at the suspect.

Deras said the man hid behind his vehicle. At that point, he said the officers didn’t know if he was mortally wounded or reloading his gun. The police held their position until more officers and others arrived.

Glenwood Springs fire personnel declared the man dead at the scene, Deras said. The man was from the area, he added. No one else was injured. The Garfield County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s name.

Deras said the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is helping process the scene and the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office will handle the criminal investigation.

The officer who shot the man will be placed on administrative leave and the police department will conduct an internal investigation, Deras said.

Stores in the shopping center were open. The police chief said all the people in the stores are considered witnesses.

Deras said one officer fired all the shots. He said the investigation will establish how many shots were fired. The entire incident took place in the shopping center parking lot, he added.

Police recovered what Deras called a high-capacity firearm that he said belonged to the suspect.

Man killed by Fort Collins police in cemetery shooting suspected in cold-case homicide https://www.denverpost.com/2024/08/25/fort-collins-police-shooting-grandview-cemetery-clayton-pierce/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 21:12:30 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6575674 A 42-year-old man fatally shot by Fort Collins police during an armed confrontation at Grandview Cemetery in July was a suspect in a 2019 cold-case homicide, police officials said Friday.

Clayton Pierce was shot by Fort Collins police on July 21 after he crashed his vehicle near City Park and fled the scene armed with an “AR-style” rifle and handgun, according to a decision letter published by the 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office on Friday.

Pierce was involved in a single-vehicle rollover crash and left the scene armed with two “ghost guns,” or guns without serial numbers, which are illegal to own, sell or create.

Pierce was also carrying a bottle of bourbon with the words “His last day” written on it, according to the district attorney’s letter.

He pointed the rifle at responding police officers and shot one officer in the arm, according to the agency. He then walked into Grandview Cemetery, where he was fatally shot by police.

Pierce had twice the legal driving limit of alcohol as well as methamphetamine, THC and gabapentin in his system at the time of his death, according to the letter.

District Attorney Gordon McLaughlin found Fort Collins Police Services Sgt. Brian Mallory and Officers Peter Nolan, August Barber and Cole Giandomenico were legally justified in using deadly force “to defend themselves, other officers and the public at large” from the threat posed by Pierce.

At the time of Pierce’s death, Fort Collins police were “in the process of formalizing charges” against him in connection to a 2019 cold-case homicide, the police agency said Friday.

Detectives determined there was “sufficient evidence” to arrest Pierce on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of Joseph “Sonny” Brigman.

Brigman, 62, died from a gunshot wound after he was found unresponsive in his apartment in the 4100 block of Verbena Way the night of April 29, 2019, according to the Fort Collins Coloradoan.

Around 8 p.m. Tuesday, Thornton officers approached a man with a warrant in a parking lot in the 200 block of East 120th Avenue — just west of Interstate 25 near Webster Lake — according to a news release from the police department.

Officers told the man he was under arrest, but he refused to listen to officers and attempted to walk away, the news release stated.

The police department said officers fired a taser at the man, but it was “ineffective.” When the man allegedly pulled out a handgun in response, multiple officers shot him.

Paramedics transported the man to a hospital with “serious injuries,” police said in the release. An update on his condition was not available Wednesday morning.

The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the shooting and the officers’ use of force.

None of the officers were injured, and all have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation, police said. The number of officers involved in the shooting was not available Wednesday.

Armed woman shot by Larimer County sheriff’s deputies after high-speed chase https://www.denverpost.com/2024/08/20/police-shooting-larimer-county-loveland-car-chase-sheriff-deputy/ Tue, 20 Aug 2024 14:01:33 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6569377 An armed woman was shot and injured by Larimer County sheriff’s deputies Tuesday after a high-speed chase through Loveland, sheriff’s officials said.

Just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, a Larimer County sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull over a car whose registered owner — an adult woman — had a warrant out for her arrest and a revoked license, according to a new release from the sheriff’s office.

The driver refused to pull over and led deputies on a chase through west Loveland, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies tried to slow down the suspect with tire spikes near 14th Street and Lincoln Avenue, but the woman continued driving at speeds over 100 mph, sheriff’s officials said.

Sheriff’s officials said the woman stopped at Wheatridge Court and County Road 18, where she got out of the car with a gun. That’s when two deputies shot her.

Paramedics took the woman to the hospital, and no bystanders or first responders were injured, sheriff’s officials said.

The Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the shooting with the Loveland Police Department as the lead investigating agency.

Thornton police shoot, injure man after he fired his gun at officers https://www.denverpost.com/2024/08/12/thornton-police-officer-shooting-washington-street/ Mon, 12 Aug 2024 12:49:28 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6532679 Thornton police shot a man Sunday night after they said he fired a gun at officers following an unsuccessful effort to negotiate with him to put down his weapon.

Police said the man was taken to the hospital with “serious injuries.” There was no further information as to his condition Monday morning.

Thornton police posted a news release on X saying officers were dispatched to a parking lot in the 9700 block of Washington Street shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday to reports of a man firing a gun into the air. When officers arrived, the man pointed his gun at them and retreated into his car, the release said.

As police tried to negotiate with the man as he sat inside his car pointing his gun at himself and at police, he shot and killed his dog, authorities said. Police negotiated with the man for 30 minutes in an attempt to get him to surrender, at which point he exited his vehicle and fired at officers.

Police returned fire, striking the man, according to the release. The investigation into the shooting will be turned over to the 17th Judicial District Critical Response Team and the officers who fired their guns have been placed on administrative leave.
