Denver to test emergency cell phone alert system Thursday https://www.denverpost.com/2024/09/09/denver-test-wireless-emergency-alert-system/ Mon, 09 Sep 2024 20:16:07 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6608875 Denver will test its wireless emergency alert system Thursday, though only people who’ve opted into receiving test alerts will experience it.

The alert is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday. The test will be sent to all mobile devices located within the city and county of Denver, regardless of where the phones are registered or if they have out-of-area phone numbers. State and local tests are not enabled by default, however, so users will need to turn it on their phones’ settings to receive it.

The test is being timed in recognition of National Preparedness Month and is being conducted by the Denver Office of Emergency Management. The alerts are designed to send warnings about imminent dangers, including severe weather, public safety and other local emergencies. The test alert should be clearly marked as such.

JonBenét Ramsey TV series to feature Melissa McCarthy, Clive Owen on Paramount+ https://www.denverpost.com/2024/09/09/jonbenet-ramsey-paramount-series-melissa-mccarthy-clive-owen/ Mon, 09 Sep 2024 17:28:48 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6608636 Paramount+ will produce a new streaming TV series based on the unsolved murder of Boulder 6-year-old JonBenét Ramsey — but it won’t be filmed in Colorado.

The limited series, which is being produced to mark the 30th anniversary of her killing, will star Melissa McCarthy as JonBenét’s mother, Patsy, and Clive Owen as her father, John. They were immediate suspects in the brutal murder of the child beauty queen on Dec. 25, 1996, when she was found dead in the basement of her Boulder home.

A long ransom note, and the still-unsolved nature of the case, continue to inspire lurid fascination in the entertainment world. The crime has inspired documentary and narrative shows such as 2016’s “Getting Away with Murder” and Netflix’s 2017 experiment “Casting JonBenét,” amid many others before that. That last show casts local actors from Boulder to “offer multiple perspectives on her 1996 murder as they vie to play roles in a dramatization of the case,” Netflix wrote.

The Paramount+ series will take the dramatization route.

“(The Series) follows the Ramsey family, before and after the tragedy as they go through the painful loss of a child while facing intense public scrutiny caused by a media frenzy that caused this case to captivate an entire nation,” according to a statement from Paramount+.

“At the heart of the series, it is the story of Patsy and John Ramsey – exploring the unbreakable partnership of these two complex people – as husband and wife, as mother and father – who had committed themselves and their children to building the narrative of a perfect, privileged life only to have it destroyed one Christmas night in 1996.”

The show will be produced by 101 Studios and MTV Entertainment Studios, with production beginning soon in Calgary, Canada, according to the studio.

“JonBenét Ramsey continues to be one of the country’s most fascinating unsolved murders,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of programming at Paramount+. “The incredible talent of Melissa McCarthy, Clive Owen and the creative team led by (showrunner) Richard LaGravenese will illuminate her story with the acuity and nuance it deserves.”

McCarthy is primarily known as a comedian, but has also taken on dramatic roles.

There is no release date for the show.

Simcox was shot Saturday afternoon while doing paperwork in his marked police truck on the median of U.S. 36 just west of Federal Boulevard in Westminster. Simcox returned fire and killed the assailant, according to law enforcement. Simcox was taken to Denver Health, where he was treated and released that afternoon.

The shooter, a man who was driving a black Chevrolet pickup truck, has not been publicly identified.

His name will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office, said Trooper Gabriel Moltrer. The shooting is still under investigation as investigators look into a possible motive and interview Simcox.

The coroner’s office could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.

People with information about the shooting can contact Colorado State Patrol at 303-239-4501.

In a statement Monday morning, Gov. Jared Polis said he spoke with Simcox and he wished him a “speedy recovery.”

“Colorado thanks Cpl. Tye Simcox for his courageous and brave actions to protect himself and our community,” Polis said in the statement.

Driver suspected of injuring 3 people in Rocky Mountain National Park arrested https://www.denverpost.com/2024/09/09/rocky-mountain-national-park-rmnp-chase-car-crash/ Mon, 09 Sep 2024 13:22:28 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6608365 A 23-year-old man suspected of driving recklessly through Rocky Mountain National Park, eluding police and injuring three people in a crash over the weekend was arrested near Estes Park on Monday, according to park officials.

The man sped through the Grand Lake entrance to the park late Sunday afternoon and law enforcement tried to pull him over but did not pursue him because of his high speed and reckless driving on the 48-mile stretch of mountain highway, park officials said in a news release.

He was later identified as a resident of Hudson who is suspected in a burglary case in Grand County.

Police tried to stop him at the Deer Ridge Junction and placed “stop sticks” near the Beaver Meadows entrance, but he continued to speed south past the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center and crashed into another vehicle carrying three individuals, according to the release.

All three were taken to the hospital, one with critical injuries.

The man fled the scene after the crash and headed toward High Drive near Estes Park. He was arrested Monday in the same area.

Colorado flags to fly half-staff Monday in honor of CDOT workers killed in crash https://www.denverpost.com/2024/09/08/fatal-cdot-crash-palisade-colorado-flags-lowered/ Sun, 08 Sep 2024 20:30:22 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6607451 Flags across Colorado will fly at half-staff on Monday to honor Colorado Department of Transportation employees Trent Umberger and Nate Jones, who were killed when a Jeep driver crashed into them on U.S. 6 near Palisade on Wednesday.

Gov. Jared Polis ordered flags to be lowered in remembrance of the two Grand Junction maintenance workers in a news release Friday.

Umberger and Jones were following safety protocols when they parked off of the road to repair a sign, Colorado State Patrol officials said after an initial investigation.

They were removing a sign from the truck bed when the driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee ran off the side of the road and hit them, according to CSP.

Umberger, Jones and a passenger in the Jeep, Kathi Ann Wallace of Grand Junction, died at the scene.

State patrol officials are still investigating the crash and potential charges against the driver, who sustained minor injuries.

Boulder city councilwoman, two others attacked on University Hill https://www.denverpost.com/2024/09/08/tara-winer-boulder-assault-university-hill-nanas-dim-sum/ Sun, 08 Sep 2024 16:24:39 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6607197 Boulder city councilwoman Tara Winer and two other people were attacked by a 26-year-old man yelling racial slurs on University Hill on Friday night, according to witnesses and the Boulder Police Department.

A man was yelling racial slurs and disrupting a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Nana’s Dim Sum & Dumplings when Winer confronted him and he punched her in the face and knocked her to the ground, she told the Daily Camera.

Boulder Chamber and city officials gathered outside the restaurant at 1125 13th. St., when a man walking past the ceremony started yelling at people and wielding a knife, said Chamber President John Tayer.

The man appeared to leave the area but later returned, Tayer said.

Winer was “OK” other than a headache and pain in her ribs following the assault, the Daily Camera reported. Boulder police confirmed no one was seriously injured in the encounter.

The man was arrested on suspicion of felony menacing and third-degree assault.

“I very much appreciate councilmember Tara Winer standing up to hateful speech and also thankful for the heroic response by our Boulder Chamber Ambassador Matt Jensen in confronting and making sure this didn’t escalate into something more tragic,” Tayer said.
