A week of wildfires along Colorado’s Front Range https://www.denverpost.com/2024/08/02/colorado-wildfires-photos-alexander-mountain-stone-canyon-quarry/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 14:03:34 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6512192 A series of wildfires burning along the Front Range foothills killed one person, damaged or destroyed at least 30 buildings, caused the governor to activate the Colorado National Guard and cloaked the sweltering Denver metro in a heavy cloud of smoke.

Four fires, all sparked along the Front Range since Monday have burned across more than 10,000 acres as of Thursday evening and prompted the evacuation of thousands of people.

Fire crews in Boulder County extinguished the small, multi-acre Lake Shore fire on Thursday, but another wildfire sparked in western Colorado — near Nucla — just hours later.

All four major fires currently burning — the Quarry fire in Jefferson County, the Alexander Mountain fire in Larimer County, the Stone Canyon fire in Boulder and Larimer counties and the Bucktail fire in Montrose County — began this week and grew rapidly, fueled by hot, dry weather and arid conditions on the ground.

Deep pockets fuel primary election fight for Colorado Democratic Party’s future

A dizzying array of outside groups have unloaded more than $3.7 million on several Democratic primary races in and around metro Denver, as labor groups, corporations and more opaque spenders jockey to steer the ideological direction of the Democratic Party in newly blue Colorado.

Group tied to Colorado election overhaul drops $1 million in last-minute primary spending

A group backed by a wealthy Denverite who’s trying to overhaul Colorado’s election system dropped $1 million on more than a dozen statehouse races just days before a hotly contested primary Election Day, pumping another huge sum of cash into contests already awash in outside spending and dark money.

U.S. 3rd Congressional District

Colorado’s 3rd District prepares for epic, costly election battle — even without Lauren Boebert

Since U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert opted to change her address to one clear across the state late last year, the race for Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District has fallen out of the media glare that seemingly shines on the controversial Republican congresswoman wherever she goes.

U.S. 4th Congressional District

Does Lauren Boebert have her GOP primary locked up — or will a lesser-known candidate break out?

U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert has uncorked a powerful political brew in her quest to clear a field of five Republican primary opponents, all of whom have deeper roots in Colorado’s easternmost district than the second-term congresswoman.

Republican Greg Lopez skips debate in Eastern Plains congressional contest

Colorado’s 4th Congressional District special election debate at the Grizzly Rose on Saturday featured two political novices, a guy who doesn’t want to win and an empty chair set aside for the presumed favorite in the race.

Rep. Lauren Boebert fights off attacks at Republican congressional debate less than a month before primary

Several Republican candidates vying to represent Colorado’s mostly rural 4th Congressional District went hard after U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert during a televised debate Thursday night, accusing her of accomplishing little during her more than three years in Congress and raising the question of whether she can prevail against a Democrat in November if nominated.

U.S. 5th Congressional District

Colorado GOP spent $20,000 to boost its chairman’s congressional campaign, records show

The Colorado GOP spent nearly $20,000 to support its chairman’s campaign against a fellow Republican for a rare open congressional seat, federal campaign finance records show — though the party’s treasurer disputes that it is out any money.

An open seat in Colorado’s 5th Congressional District has led to open warfare within the state Republican Party.

U.S. 8th Congressional District

Two Republicans aim to flip Colorado’s newest congressional district two years after Democrat won a nail-biter

The race for Colorado’s newly formed 8th Congressional District was one of the closest contests in the country in 2022, with Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo eking out a victory by a less-than-1% margin over her Republican opponent.

Who’s running for Congress in Colorado? Here are the candidates on the June 25 primary ballot.

All eight of Colorado’s congressional districts will have candidates on the June 25 primary ballot. And in three of those districts — the 3rd, 4th and 5th — the seat is open, providing the ingredients for a more boisterous fight than normal ahead of November’s election.

Pro-charter PAC pours nearly $1 million into single Colorado State Board of Education primary

Nearly $1 million — mostly from a group supporting charter schools — has poured into the Democratic primary for a seat on the Colorado State Board of Education, a race that some observers say could play a role in the future of charters in the state.

Colorado’s latest congressional campaign fundraising snapshot — the final one before the June 25 primary — showed new and intriguing dynamics emerging to stir things up in a high-profile presidential election year.

Even without Lauren Boebert as a foil, Adam Frisch leads in fundraising in Colorado congressional contests

Democrat Adam Frisch brought in the biggest financial haul of any of Colorado’s congressional hopefuls during the first three months of the year, raising $1.4 million — nearly six times as much as his main Republican rival in the 3rd Congressional District, Jeff Hurd.

Democracy, economy and immigration are among issues Denver Post readers say are most important in election

Moderate and liberal Denver Post readers agree: the nation’s democracy and good government are the most important issues in this year’s elections.

Coloradans want candidates to focus on good government and democracy — but that can mean many things

A lot of Coloradans are worried about our democracy. And they want candidates to pay attention to it, too. That is the message that comes through loud and clear from more than 4,500 responses to the Voter Voices survey that The Denver Post and dozens of other newsrooms around Colorado are circulating during this election year, as of last week. The effort has been coordinated by the Colorado News Collaborative.

We are asking Coloradans what they want candidates to focus on this election. Thousands have answered.

Thousands of Coloradans responding to a survey by their local newsrooms say candidates competing for their votes this year need to be focused primarily on several broad issues: democracy and good government, the economy and cost of living, the environment, climate and natural resources, immigration and abortion.

DU men’s lacrosse jumps all over Michigan early, advances to NCAA Tournament quarterfinals https://www.denverpost.com/2024/05/11/du-mens-lacrosse-michigan-ncaa-tournament-win/ Sat, 11 May 2024 23:32:55 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=6051498 Looking for their first NCAA Tournament quarterfinal trip in six years, the DU Pioneers left no doubt Saturday afternoon.

The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team set the tone early with seven goals in the opening 15 minutes of its first-round NCAA Tournament game against Michigan, then kept the Wolverines at arm’s length the rest of the way to claim a 16-11 win at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

The Pioneers will face either No. 4 seed Syracuse or Towson next weekend in their eighth NCAA quarterfinal appearance, with first-year head coach Matt Brown one win away from leading DU to its first Final Four since 2017.

Unlike the week before when the Pios (12-3) dropped their conference tournament opener to Villanova, there were no hiccups in Brown’s first NCAA Tournament game. The tournament’s No. 5 seed was ready to rock from the opening whistle.

Junior midfielder Mic Kelly and freshman attacker Cody Malawsky scored two goals apiece in the first period, staking DU to a 7-1 lead. Then graduate attacker Richie Connell and junior short stick defensive midfielder Casey Wilson netted back-to-back goals to start the second period, as the fifth-seeded Pios established a 9-1 advantage that was way too much for the Wolverines (10-7) to overcome.

Grad student attacker JJ Sillstrop, Malawsky and Kelly all finished with hat tricks, while the latter also tacked on two assists. Malawsky and Kelly’s third goals of the game came in back-to-back fashion in the final four minutes of the third period, after Michigan scored five straight to pull within three at 11-8 with 8:50 left in the frame.

That was as close as the Wolverines would get the rest of the way.

Wilson and Connell both netted a pair of goals, while junior midfielder Joshua Carlson had three assists, junior midfielder Jack Tortolani added two assists, grad student Alec Stathakis picked up 12 ground balls and senior goaltender Malcolm Kleban made 10 saves.
