An officer with the Wheat Ridge Police Department was stabbed multiple times and seriously injured early Wednesday morning.

Police say they responded around 1 a.m. to the 11000 block of West 44th Avenue on a call about a stolen U-Haul rental truck.

Once on scene, two officers confronted the driver of the reportedly stolen truck, police said, and the suspect stabbed one of the officers. The other officer was able to take the suspect into custody, and call for police backup and medical response.

Wheat Ridge police say Andre Jones, 29, was arrested on suspicion of stabbing the officer.

Police said the incident is under investigation and that they are focused on the injured officer who was identified Wednesday afternoon as Allan Fischer, a 20-year veteran with the department.

“After surgery for multiple stab wounds, he (Fischer) is recovering and reported to be in good spirits at the hospital,” police said in a tweet.

In the tweet above, Fischer is pictured last Halloween giving a child, an “aspiring recruit,” a tour of the police department.

“The officer’s family is at the hospital with him as he begins his recovery and the support of our community is greatly appreciated,” police said.
